PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY

The best oral health stems from good quality preventive dental care. This means attending regular examinations with Picton Dental every six months, to identify potential problems early, minimise discomfort, and avoid the expense of unnecessary treatment. Regular oral hygiene visits can help keep your teeth and gums healthy and maintain your dental health for a lifetime.

Examination & Clean

Together with your daily oral hygiene routine at home, regular visits to Picton Dental are vitally important to ensure your dental health is the best it can be.

Regular examinations can help prevent tooth and gum problems, and keep your smile bright and healthy and your breath fresh. Your dentist will check for signs of tooth decay or gum disease; performing scaling and polishing to prevent oral diseases; and give you advice on tooth brushing and flossing techniques.

At your regular dental visits you’ll receive a professional scale and cleaning, to remove the calcified plaque deposits, which accumulate over time. Your dentist will also assess your overall oral health and check for any potentials problems, and also highlight signs and symptoms of other general health problems including heart disease, mouth cancer or blood disorders.

Oral Hygiene

To maintain the health of your teeth and gums, it’s crucial that you have a high quality at-home oral hygiene routine. When you brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, floss at least once a day, and visit Picton Dental for regular professional cleaning appointments, you’ll have the very best chance of ensuring your teeth and gums are healthy and your breath is fresh.

Dietary Advice

The food and drink you consume every day has just as big an impact on the health of your teeth and gums as it does on your general health. This is because starchy and surgery foods and drinks will act to produce acid in your mouth, which attacks tooth enamel and eventually causes decay and potential tooth loss.

To avoid this, try to reduce your intake of sugary and starchy drinks and snacks, and instead choose foods like fresh fruit and vegetables, which will have a much better effect on your teeth.

Children’s Dentistry

As a family oriented dental practice we’re always delighted to welcome children into our practice, to help put them on the road to exceptional dental health for life. An early introduction to our team can help your kids become familiar with our people and our dental technology, and reduce any potential nervousness about visiting the dentist the first time.

Importantly, we’ve designed our practice to provide a relaxed, comfortable environment to help your child feel completely at ease. There is a purpose build kids play den in our waiting area. And of course, all the Picton Dental team are always happy to answer your child’s questions about tooth cleaning, oral hygiene, or childhood tooth loss.

Regular Check-ups

With preventive care and regular checkups with your dentist, any potential problems with your children’s oral health can be diagnosed early. In turn, this can help save you money by attending to minor problems before they become major ones. And naturally, the friendly Picton Dental team will be happy to help you and your family put in place an effective preventive program at home.

Fluoride Treatment

Tooth Mousse

The enamel of your child’s newly erupted teeth has yet to mature, meaning their teeth are more vulnerable to acid attack and tooth decay. By boosting levels of calcium and phosphate in your child’s saliva by using tooth mousse, we can help prevent decay and replace mineral loss each day.

An advanced new Australian oral health product, tooth mousse is designed to help combat tooth decay and sensitivity by re-mineralising the tooth’s enamel surface. Tooth mousse can help prevent tooth erosion, early decay, fluorosis, and lesions due to orthodontics and tooth sensitivity.

Using a small amount about the size of a five-cent piece, the tooth mousse is simply rubbed onto the teeth surfaces twice a day, and left for three minutes. There’s no need to rinse, and with the pleasant strawberry flavour, your child will be happy to use it.

Regular use of tooth mousse can help strengthen your child’s tooth enamel and protect against tooth decay. When used in conjunction with fluoride treatment, the mousse can help enhance fluoride penetration, further protecting teeth. In fact, if tooth decay is discovered early enough, regular use of tooth mousse can help reverse the decay and in some cases prevent the need for a filling.

Fissure Sealants

Your child’s molars are covered with hundreds of tiny pits and fissures which brushing and fluoride are unable to fully reach into. This means that when food and bacteria become trapped, tooth decay and cavities can potentially occur.

One solution is to fill in these vulnerable areas using fissure sealants, which cover and smooth your child’s teeth, making them easier to clean. The liquid sealant flows into the teeth’s tiny imperfections and sets hard like plastic to create a protective barrier against plaque and bacteria build-up.

Taking just a few minutes per tooth to apply, fissure sealants don’t require anesthetic. They will indicate for child from around age six if deep fissures are detected.

Mouthguards

When your child plays sports, it’s important that they wear a custom-made mouthguard from Picton Dental. Helping avoid painful and expensive dental injuries, our precision-made mouthguards are made to fit your child’s bite pattern, mouth and gum contour, to give the very best protection.

Your child may also find that our individually fitted mouthguards help them breathe more easily and speak more clearly than an off-the-shelf model.
